My Story!! Me! Me! .... by Tofu

Oh great oh great I get to tell my own story is this for real is this for real do you mean it I am so excited oh boy oh boy oh boy!!! *pant pant pant*

I mean it this is so cool when can I start when can I start what should I say oh I am stuttering *pant pant pant* ok ok punctuation you need punctuation ok ok I can do this I can do this it is so cool I get to tell my own story oh boy oh boy oh boy!!! *pant pant lick paw pant*

*Deep Breath*

*Lick paws*

*Smell Pickles's butt*

Ok, now I feel better.. Hi there! My name is Tofu! I am a two year old french bulldog. I look a bit like a boston terrier though, and I have seen my own image in the mirror, and boy! I got scared!

I was born at this pet farm somwhere local west, and at four months old I left mommy with a man who seemed to like me very much. But he seemed very troubled by me in the two days when I was at his home. I was good, and I don't really know what was wrong.

On the third day, Man took me to a small shop with many other dogs, and left me there, in a little glass room. I had to eat, urine and defecate on the same place. I couldn't play with the other dogs as I was never let out. I was always hungry. And lonely.

After what seemed like forever, in reality four months, another Man walked in and looked at me for a long time. He seemed like he had a ball hidden in his pockets somewhere, I like him! Three weeks later, he came with the previous Man and took me home. I was let out of the little glass room! As the new Man held me, his fingers ran over my protuding rib cage, and stroking my head. I didn't know what to make out of it and was frightened of everything.

I was given a long bath and they stuffed stuff into my ears, and they came out all black, gooey and smelly. For the first time, I felt clean and refreshed! A grumpy brindle sat in the corner, watching me all the time. I wanna play I wanna play I wanna play! Oh where's the ball where's the ball what do you mean you do not like to play balls do you even know what a ball means??? Where is the ball where is the ball there must be a ball oh oh oh! I am hungry. New Man and Woman fed me with the food that previous Man provided. It was dry, it was fishy but I was so hungry!! From then on, I never had to starve again. Well, I wished I could eat every hour.

Within three months, I started to itch and grew many pimples. Whenever I scratched myself, tufts of fur just flew off my body. Amazing feat! Brindle Grumpy can never manage that! It was cool but horribly itchy.

Man and Woman brought me to other man and woman and put me on metal tables, to let them run through my fur, put light in my mouth and eyes and harrass me with needles. I get treats everyday after that but they taste bitter and get shoved into my mouth whenever I try to spit them out. I have less pimples and fur flyaways when I get the treats but whenever they are finished, I get more pimples and fur flyaways.

This continued for a while until one day, as I stare down my food bowl, there were no more dry fishy stuff. It was soft, warm REAL food. Did I mention they tasted like heaven? Brindle Grumpy loved them too, and said the change in food was to make us better. No more pimples? Cool! No more fur flyaway feats? Awwwwww.

Within one month of feeding home cooked food, Man and Woman were very happy. Well, it was not a miracle situation where me and Brindle Grumpy were fully recovered from our ailments. However, it was clear how REAL food affect our overall well being. Did I mention it taste like heaven? One good way of knowing if what went in was good, is to observe how it looks when it comes out.

Our stool became less bulky, and less smelly (note: that does not mean it became nice enough for humans to sniff at). Our urine went from dark yellow to clear. For Brindle not-so-Grumpy-now, it was more of a light yellow, due to her long term reliance on medicated shampoo, it is still chemicals entering into her system. We needed to drink less water, because of how well hydrated REAL food is. Dogs that get too thirsty are not healthy and risk bloating if we overdrink to overcome the thirst. I stopped dropping fur in clumps, and Brindle's toxic fart bombs just became less fatal. I can't stand the stink myself sometimes T_T

So this is my story, and Doggiestyle Bento's story. Woman wants to share her love to all canine friends out there. I hope she cooks more so that I don't have to share. Did I mention it taste like heaven? Oh boy oh boy I told my story where is the ball where is the ball I am ready where is the ball??

Snacks and Facts

How many times have we found our dogs looking at us with such puppy eyes, with a long yearning expression, just so that they can get a treat from you? And it takes a lot of determination to ignore their silent wide-eyed pleas.

Like humans, dogs do not need snacks as part of their daily diet. Excessive snacks can cause obesity, which is the root of many problems such as diabetes, stress on heart, liver, kidney, lungs and joints.

There is, however, a positive side to dog treats, as very effective and useful tool for training. Tasty treats sometimes have other useful purposes e.g. introducing a stranger to your dog.

So the real concern with snacks is not to completely abstain your dog from them. The key is in Selection, and Quantity.

It is very important to limit snacks to those of the healthy variety, and to always, always, always, and, without  fail, include them in your dog's daily calorie count. We know very well what excessive snacking can do to us... Right? It is important to realize that those same results will be seen in your dog, even if it is less obvious to the human eye.

When it comes to snacking, there are a few basic rules of thumb to follow:
Snacks should never account for more than 5% of the total daily diet, as measured in calories.
Avoid fatty snacks, such as the commercial imitation bacon and sausage types, which only serve to upset the digestive system.

Just like your doggy’s main meals, always choose treats made with natural ingredients with no chemicals and preservatives.  Very often it only takes a small quantity of chemicals or preservatives to compensate your dog’s general well being.

We understand in the modern society, many do not even have time to cook for yourself, let alone for your pets. That is why we provide the Bento service, and ten months ahead of our Café launch, so that all dogs and dog owners can enjoy good food, and a healthy relationship.

Our Doggy Deli Delights and Meaty Nibbles are made with the same human-grade, high quality ingredients as our Cafeterrier Menu. We do our best to complement your lifestyle and help you shower your beloved canine family member with love and care.

DoggieStyle Café believes in giving our beloved pets the best. What is the best? Wholesome, nutritious food packed with warmth, laced with love.

The Furrier, the Better ... by Pickles

Ok, I have mentioned earlier that my condition has improved over the last one year. Besides getting to sleep in airconditioned room almost every night, and diligent cleaning by my human pets, getting to eat real food made a significant difference. I mean, no matter how good commercial dog food is, it is still, commercial. I.e., the food is highly processed, with a lot of chemicals, and preservatives added into it. Some of the brands even have poor sources of meats, or no real meat at all. As humans, you do not always eat food that has enough preservatives to last it for a year. It is an additional burden to the digestive system and to the liver and kidneys to get rid of all the chemicals and toxins in the body.

My paws and neck area were entirely bald, and the skin has developed to a thick growth, which is hard and dry. Everyday my human pets come home to see the floor littered with fallen black skin bits that I scratch off, with the occasional red sticky substance oozing out from my skin.

Today, I am much better, with the occasional breakout especially during rainy season but I definitely can stride out of the house with much more decent paws now. Who says middle aged women cant look good??

Every Dog has its Story...by Pickles

My name is Pickles, a brindle french bulldog. I am not really French; as I hailed from Australia. But they say it's my breed, so I guess I am really Aussie French. I have had puppies but they were always taken away. I was abandoned about three years ago with serious yeast systemic infection (Malassezia sp.), with about 90% fur loss at that time. It was a painful and torturing experience which no cute doggy like me should ever need to go through.

After what seemed forever, I was lucky to have been waited upon by an experienced couple who runs a boarding house, who spent unlimited effort in nursing me to health. In fall 2008, I adopted this mutt couple who came and visit me every weekend. They think that I am a sweet and calm brindle, who is very kind to humans and a boisterous alpha-wannabe (Believe me, I am better than they think!).

At the time of the adoption, I had specific areas that were bald and with thick grey skin like that of an elephant. It itched and was sore, so so often that I can't help scratching till it bled. It required absolute dedication to clean me everyday and twice weekly bathing (one hour each time) to ensure my infection is under control. Even then there was no hope of further improvement to my elephant skin areas which would crack and bleed sometimes. Humans make good pets; they do everything to take care of you!

One week after I arrive at my new home, the mutt couple brought back a 10 month old white frenchbull dog. She looked more like a cross between a frenchie and a boston terrier, and was very skinny, with sooty ears and heavily soiled underbelly when she arrived at my house (note: it is MY house). The mutt couple named her Tofu. Oh well, I guess I could use an underling. :)

Very soon, Tofu had a very strong allergy reaction, with huge pimples and boils appearing all over her body, and losing fur like lallang in full bloom everyday. Maybe white fur is weaker than brindle fur?? Hmmmmm...

Finally they decided to cook for us. They were convinced by my previous pet about the benefits of a home cooked diet with fresh and natural ingredients, without the invasion of chemicals, preservatives, unknown animal product sources and all Nature's goodness and wholesome benefits. I raised both paws and supported the decision!

Human pets don't smell and howl to communicate; they had to spend a lot of time talking to experts like my previous pet, other rehomers who feed home cooked diets, internet sources and reference books that they can get their hands on. If you had done the same thing, you might realise how some human information can be a bit dubious, based on individual beliefs and experience. Human communication is a lot more backward than dogs. They slogged through the sea of information to arrive at what they have found to work. That really works.

It has been more than a year since I adopted the humans, and nine months on REAL food with properly planned nutrition. And paw licking good! We have made significant improvements, bit by bit, and we are very happy with the progress that we have made. And my tummy has been really happy and satisfied! ^o^

All dogs should eat REAL food. Nobody wants to survive on commercial food only. Imagine yourself having cereal and ONLY cereal for the rest of your life. It doesnt matter how nutritious it is; if it is the same forever, and dry, you'd get bored. It is primitive instinct to live for food and companionship. Why deprive us dogs of living like a dog, eating proper food, like YOU humans?

And so DoggieStyle Bento has started, to share nutritious healthy food with all canines, to spread the love for our previous furry friends. I can't wait for the next meal! Boy, am I glad I got a canine chef as my pet!
