Snacks and Facts

How many times have we found our dogs looking at us with such puppy eyes, with a long yearning expression, just so that they can get a treat from you? And it takes a lot of determination to ignore their silent wide-eyed pleas.

Like humans, dogs do not need snacks as part of their daily diet. Excessive snacks can cause obesity, which is the root of many problems such as diabetes, stress on heart, liver, kidney, lungs and joints.

There is, however, a positive side to dog treats, as very effective and useful tool for training. Tasty treats sometimes have other useful purposes e.g. introducing a stranger to your dog.

So the real concern with snacks is not to completely abstain your dog from them. The key is in Selection, and Quantity.

It is very important to limit snacks to those of the healthy variety, and to always, always, always, and, without  fail, include them in your dog's daily calorie count. We know very well what excessive snacking can do to us... Right? It is important to realize that those same results will be seen in your dog, even if it is less obvious to the human eye.

When it comes to snacking, there are a few basic rules of thumb to follow:
Snacks should never account for more than 5% of the total daily diet, as measured in calories.
Avoid fatty snacks, such as the commercial imitation bacon and sausage types, which only serve to upset the digestive system.

Just like your doggy’s main meals, always choose treats made with natural ingredients with no chemicals and preservatives.  Very often it only takes a small quantity of chemicals or preservatives to compensate your dog’s general well being.
